Xenadyne Mediator

Mediator is a software component that provides configurable element-access capabilities in network-management applications. Your application accesses Mediator services via the C/C++, Java, or C# APIs.

The Mediator product consists of the following components:

  • C/C++ runtime library and documentation
  • Java classes and documentation
  • NEDL development tools
  • Network Element Simulator
  • TL1 Agent Framework

Mediator is completely thread-safe, and provides API support for a both single- and multi-threaded applications. Mediator has been proven in a variety of applications by major telecomm equipment vendors and system integrators.

Management Interfaces

Mediator supports a variety of popular network management interfaces, and is extensible to new interfaces via Xenadyne's Network Element Description Language (NEDL). A single Mediator application can access all of the following equipment types and NMS interfaces concurrently, in any combination:
  • ASCII protocols such as TL1, and vendor-proprietary ASCII interfaces including Nokia NMS-NMC, Nokia BSC, Nortel OMC-D and OMC-S.
  • Binary protocols such as QD2, ASN.1, and vendor-proprietary binary interfaces including Ericsson CDR and CSS, and Siemens EMOS.
  • SNMP versions V1, V2c and V3 (with HMAC-MD5 authentication).

NEDL definitions are loaded at run-time, allowing Mediator-based applications to be extended or reconfigured at run-time. Xenadyne provides NEDL models for many popular network management interfaces, and our professional services staff is ready to assist you in developing new NEDL models.

Communication Protocols

Mediator provides built-in support for these network protocols:
  • TCP/IP
  • Telnet
  • Serial
  • X.25 (Solaris/Sparc only)

Mediator can be extended to support additional network protocols, such as OSI.

Operating Systems

Mediator is available for many popular operating systems, including:
  • Solaris/Sparc/x86
  • Windows NT/2K/XP
  • Linux/x86
  • AIX
  • HPUX

Performance and Scalability

Performance is critical when managing large networks, and choosing Mediator is the best step you can take to ensure that your system meets its performance and scalability goals. Xenadyne Mediator has demonstrated, the ability to:
  • Process 10,000 TL1 alarms per second sustained.
  • Process TL1 performance reports at 1 Mbytes per second.
  • Monitor ten thousand network elements concurrently.
Mediator uses multithreading, so that throughput can scale with the number of processors in the host system. Consult with Xenadyne's support staff to choose the hardware platform that's appropriate to your needs.
